This is my first attempt at photographing the moon. My guess is that I need a filter, or a cloudy night, or maybe a not-full moon, in order to improve this.

Yes, a neutral density filter (or clouds) will help. The full moon never shows the sharp detail of other phases since there are no shadows. Here is an example of about as well as one can do:

Thanks, Dad! I plan to get a ND filter at some point. In the meantime, I’ll try again next week when the moon is less full. Do you think it would help to go somewhere darker than our backyard as well?
My usual lens is having some issues; I’ll buy a new one when I’ve got some free cash. In the meantime I’m playing about with telephoto, which is where the idea for the moonshot came from!
