We went to see The Gang’s All Here with friends at the Carolina Cinemas in Asheville this weekend.  What great fun this 1943 Busby Berkeley musical was!  It’s a timeless story of: Boy has Girl, Boy wants different Girl, Boy lies to new Girl, Boy Loses Girl, original Girl decides to run off to Broadway, Boy’s Father declares everyone knows he wants new Girl, Boy gets new Girl (presumably since the film ends before that’s confirmed).

This song made me (literally) laugh out loud.  I can remember my grandmother Dorothy’s love for Kentucy, and Paducah; she’d protest loudly anytime Florida played Kentucky that she wasn’t a Florida fan, she was a Kentucky fan, born and bred.  She even had a flag to show her support for her team.  Honestly, the only time I really remember us watching sports in our home was when Grandma was there and Kentucky was playing (this is probably willful misrememberance, but there you have it).

I traveled with my folks out to visit the family cemetery in Kentucky once many moons ago and listened as the families still living around the land told stories of my father as a boy with a book always in hand spent his summers riding down the river (once memorably on a raft put together using vines of poison ivy).  We cleared up the overgrown ground around the grave sites and then headed back toward our respective homes.
