It’s been a nice long weekend, but today is back to business. Hoping that Moira and I will hit the gym tonight as well. She had a photo shoot on Sunday immediately on the heels of returning from Johnson City. Here are two of the photos that I liked the best:

Next weekend, in an effort to add some diversity to her portfolio, she’ll be starting a new monthly tradition: working with a favorite photographer and 2 to 3 new models. This also has the advantage of expanding her network of models. For this first week, she’s asked me to be a model (to add some age/weight diversity to her portfolio). I’m excited, glad to help, and nervous. Like my gramma Dorothy (and my dad for that matter), I feel like I don’t know how to smile. Isn’t smiling almost a prerequisite for being photographed? This week’s goal: practice smiling.

Moira’s first body art show

Moira was asked (by her future mother-in-law) to participate in a body art show in Johnson City, TN this past Friday. She was very excited! She brought her own model (the lovely Grace, with whom she has worked before), bought two expensive MAC Chromacakes, and began practicing! The show was organized by Ren, Patti and Paul Bishop (a Johnson City photographer). Ren and Patti won top honors for their work in the show as well.

Here are some photos of the event.

Moira's vision was a window (seen on Grace's tummy) to a woman's soul. Grace was painted as vine-covered building on her front and a fantastical scene on her back.

Grace's backside is painted as a fantastical scene, symbolizing a women's inner beauty and strength (if I recall correctly).

You can see nearly all of the models here. We began to walk down Main Street toward the last of the "First Friday" revelers when the models noticed that being outdoors, nearly naked, was actually darn cold. Brrr!

TJ wasn't painted intentionally to resemble this photopainting, but she definitely used it to good effect when asked to pose for pictures!

Rachel's body was painted by a local painter. The artist made liberal use of metallic body paints to very good effect!

This model was the only one daring enough to wear a thong! She was painted in white and blue with animal prints. She was also one of the tallest models in the show.

The evening's theme was "Smoke and Mirrors: The Grand Illusion" or something similar. This model was made up to be a magician (it was one of the few instances where the theme was very clearly evident). With most models it seemed that to recognize the illusion you'd need to speak to the artist.

Rufus, having decided that his lovely black polo wasn't nearly hairy enough, made friends with the local art cat, Sheddy McShedster.

When all was said and done the girls were very, very tired. It was a long, but satisfying, day!

Moira has ideas already for how she’ll tackle the next show, what she’ll do differently, and what she’ll refine. It was great fun to see friends, enjoy the artistry, food, and conversation. I do hope the shows continue!

Make-up: Flowerly eyes

I can’t quite remember what inspired this eye make-up for Moira - probably a YouTube contest of some sort – but I like it. She continues to pump out the YouTube tutorials at a solid pace. I continue to watch just because seeing how she’s getting better at them is exciting – even if I’ll never use the tutorials to do my own make-up look, I’d guess.

…Moira, having learned how to make a YouTube video, is now making more tutorial videos, and writing a blog.

Next thing you know she’ll be a big-time make-up artist and not even remember us.

MAC Cosmetics called – and she has an interview for a temporary position there over the summer! * Yowsers! She’s busily looking through her portfolio so we can get 8 – 10 shots printed this weekend. In addition to jumping for joy, she’s also practicing interview questions, lining up a model in case she gets to the “show us your stuff” part of the interview process, and planning her clothes for the big day.

Send all good wishes to her email. She’d appreciate it!

*If a post is missing the M in a word, it’s because I have to hit M several times to get it to show up on the screen. I will probably “remove” the M this weekend and see if I can figure out what’s wrong with it. /crosses fingers

… at the Salon Corral!

Moira had a shoot on Sunday … and one of the photos taken was of her and the hair dresser. I think they look like they’re about to square off for a dual, or a shoot-out. The photos of the shoot itself should be available later – you can always check her Model Mayhem account (see link off to the right there) for details.

Today was also a day of firsts:

Trevor joined me at the gym

Arlette picked me up for work

Day 70: Teeth and Make-up

I’ve been on antibiotics for my abscess for about half the doses now – and the abscess isn’t any better at all. Indeed tonight it was as swollen and dreadful as it has ever been. I’m scheduled to undergo a root canal on Wednesday but will call the dentist today to make sure that he doesn’t want me to try other antibiotics and clear this up before the root canal. Ick.

Moira had a meet-and-discuss session today in Asheville regarding her next photo shoot. This one involves an interpretation of the graces and deadly sins, as I recall. There are a lot of models, a hairstylist, and a photographer also involved. It sounds exciting and lovely. Marc and I enjoyed dinner out together while in town waiting on Moira. We plan to move our “date” each week to coincide with Moira’s activities so that we don’t end up going to Asheville any more often than necessary.

Day 45: A day of learning

Today Moira and I had appointments with folks at the YMCA to learn how to use the weight equipment – or at least that’s what I thought I had an appointment to do. It turned out I had a much more wonderful appointment set up than I’d realized. I met with EJ at 9 am and spent the next two hours talking about my goals (controlling high blood pressure and pre-diabetes with exercise/diet rather than medications now that I’m uninsured) and how to best work toward meeting them.

Cardio: EJ helped me determine what settings I should use on the treadmill (start with no incline, 2.8 mph for 30 min with a 5 min warm-up before and 5-min cool down after, adding 5 min a week until I hit an hour). We looked at the elliptical trainer that I usually use -and he showed me that it has been on a pretty high incline when I start even though I didn’t know it! With the incline set to 0 this is an exercise I could do while being able to control my heart rate. Wow! That was a real eye opener.

Weights: EJ then showed me how to use four of the eleven pieces of weight equipment they have (we have another appointment on Friday to teach me to use other pieces).

Stretches: We finished up with a full body stretch. One of the tools we used from streching was the Procor Stretch Trainer. I actually really liked this tool – even though it felt like I’d be tumbling backwards any second now. I didn’t know there were “machines” you could use to help you stretch!

I’m definitely feeling my workout this evening, but look forward to doing it all again tomorrow. I never did like that my physician put me immediately on medications for my border-line hypertension, and pre-diabetes. Now I’m going to figure out how to reverse both without meds.

Day 28: Oscars!

We’re preparing for our annual Oscar party – with our usual attendance of four. We’re not terribly social most years and this one is no different. We’ve got appetizers planned, and some sweet treats. Marc will move the cable box out to the television in the living room (the one we only use for playing the Wii really) and we’ll all gather there in just a little bit to watch the pre-show.

In honor of the Oscars party this year, Milo has created a new look* using a tutorial on YouTubeIsTheDevil. I really do become more amazed at her skills every time she stretches herself.

Moira continues to develop her plans for becoming a full-time professional make-up artist. This will include enrolling at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock – in their Esthetics Technology program. The one-year program will leave her qualified to sit for her cosmetology license. The cosmetology license in turn will enable her to work at any salon or spa – and of course makes her resume look even more impressive for other freelance and counter work.
