It’s been a nice long weekend, but today is back to business. Hoping that Moira and I will hit the gym tonight as well. She had a photo shoot on Sunday immediately on the heels of returning from Johnson City. Here are two of the photos that I liked the best:

Next weekend, in an effort to add some diversity to her portfolio, she’ll be starting a new monthly tradition: working with a favorite photographer and 2 to 3 new models. This also has the advantage of expanding her network of models. For this first week, she’s asked me to be a model (to add some age/weight diversity to her portfolio). I’m excited, glad to help, and nervous. Like my gramma Dorothy (and my dad for that matter), I feel like I don’t know how to smile. Isn’t smiling almost a prerequisite for being photographed? This week’s goal: practice smiling.

A slow weekend, but we headed to the park today to take some photographs. (I locked my keys in the car, ha ha, and then we took pictures while we waited about for someone to come and open our car.)

Marc sat on the cold metal bench and froze while I took pictures. Brrr! Brrrr!

The sun began to set while we were waiting – these trees are on the hill in Jackson Park, Hendersonvillle, NC.

Another attempt at a moon photo – this one is better. Thanks for the tips, dad!

This is my first attempt at photographing the moon. My guess is that I need a filter, or a cloudy night, or maybe a not-full moon, in order to improve this.

Photography projects

I’ve got a whole slew of photography projects I’d like to begin. I’m enjoying seeing what my camera can do, what post-processing can do.

Here are a few things I hope to work on in the coming year:

A perpetual calendar: This perpetual calendar would require some work to find the appropriate images for use in it’s creation, but I imagine it would look mighty nice on my office wall!
Green photography challenge: I’d like to take a series of green photographs that can be fused together into a single poster. Maybe other colors too. But I like green, so I though I’d start there.
An alphabet from letters on signs: I’d like to do a set of photo cards with each having a different letter on the alphabet on the front, taken from a sign in our town. Similar to the poster below, which is made up of bits of nature shots.

Looking forward to showing you the results as they happen.

Autumn is here!

We headed up the Blue Ridge Parkway again this weekend, but with one big difference: I didn’t get my camera batteries charged before we left! As a consequence, I only managed to snap a few photos before running out of juice. Here they are:

The sky is a bit blow out in this one, but the colors of the foliage is pretty true to life.

This one has only the very neat clouds and sky to recommend it. I was taking a couple test shots before setting up for “real” shots when I ran out of battery. All the best photos remained untaken, but hopefully lodged reasonably well in our memories. :)

A walk in the woods…

Marc and I went walking in along Deep Creek, outside of Bryson City, NC. Our goal was to successfully shoot a water fall, complete with running, slightly blurry water. I think I mostly succeeded!

Okay, so this is rushing water in Deep Creek. We also saw a little bit of fall color, way up high in the trees.

But then we continued on (our walk, a short 1.5 miles round trip, still tired us out) and found two very nice waterfalls.

I’ll leave you with this final image, which I think is my favorite. The color, smooth water, and lighting is all lovely, I think!

Moira’s first body art show

Moira was asked (by her future mother-in-law) to participate in a body art show in Johnson City, TN this past Friday. She was very excited! She brought her own model (the lovely Grace, with whom she has worked before), bought two expensive MAC Chromacakes, and began practicing! The show was organized by Ren, Patti and Paul Bishop (a Johnson City photographer). Ren and Patti won top honors for their work in the show as well.

Here are some photos of the event.

Moira's vision was a window (seen on Grace's tummy) to a woman's soul. Grace was painted as vine-covered building on her front and a fantastical scene on her back.

Grace's backside is painted as a fantastical scene, symbolizing a women's inner beauty and strength (if I recall correctly).

You can see nearly all of the models here. We began to walk down Main Street toward the last of the "First Friday" revelers when the models noticed that being outdoors, nearly naked, was actually darn cold. Brrr!

TJ wasn't painted intentionally to resemble this photopainting, but she definitely used it to good effect when asked to pose for pictures!

Rachel's body was painted by a local painter. The artist made liberal use of metallic body paints to very good effect!

This model was the only one daring enough to wear a thong! She was painted in white and blue with animal prints. She was also one of the tallest models in the show.

The evening's theme was "Smoke and Mirrors: The Grand Illusion" or something similar. This model was made up to be a magician (it was one of the few instances where the theme was very clearly evident). With most models it seemed that to recognize the illusion you'd need to speak to the artist.

Rufus, having decided that his lovely black polo wasn't nearly hairy enough, made friends with the local art cat, Sheddy McShedster.

When all was said and done the girls were very, very tired. It was a long, but satisfying, day!

Moira has ideas already for how she’ll tackle the next show, what she’ll do differently, and what she’ll refine. It was great fun to see friends, enjoy the artistry, food, and conversation. I do hope the shows continue!

Autumn is here!

Autumn is officially here – by more than a week! With the chilly weather comes the changing of the leaves – but the leaves have in fact not changed all that much as yet. It’s chilly enough to need an extra blanket on the bed, and the cat enjoys napping on my lap when I pull on a quilt to warm things up.

On the other hand, it’s now officially TIGHTS weather – one of my favorite times of the year!! I’ve ordered a few pairs of tights from two places (with great coupons!) and look forward to adding them to my usual garb this fall.
